The December 2008 Rumble at the Rock Engineering Competition is now a part of combat robot history…and what better place to make history, than in the original Old English colony of Plymouth Massachusetts! ….gobble, gobble, gobble….

24 Combat robot teams from as far away as Miami Fl gathered in the Plymouth North high School engineering laboratories for an opportunity to pit their engineering expertise, technical talents and innovative ideas against a competent field of high school technocrats.

The top 4 results looked like this:

  • Tournament Champion
    Uknight Bergen County Technical School
  • Finalist
    Miniknightrous -Bergen County Technical School
  • Semi Finalist
Goodknight - Bergen County Technical School
  • Semi Finalist
    Lucky 13-Plymouth North High School

22 robot teams from as far away as Miami Florida came to fight….and they were fighting to learn more…certainly more about STEM skills, but equally important they fought to learn more about each other.

….and they learned some cool things! Like how to help fellow competitors stay in the competition by lending them parts and repairing their robots so they could continue fighting… to learn more….

The metaphor is not lost on any of the participants and while it’s pretty deadly and dangerous inside the areana, outside is an exciting and friendly place populated by people who came to share what they know and are able to do.

Here is a list of the other 18 Rumble 3 combat robot teams:

We at Plymouth North High School are very grateful for all the help and support provided by our fellow competitors, without whom, the Rumble at the Rock could not have been possible.

While everyone shared in making the R@tR 3 a success….some folks went beyond the call of duty, and we would like them to know how much they are appreciated:

Scoring is always a difficult and challenging responsibility. Think about it…if you make a mistake, you are faced with a lot of folks trying to take you off their favorite person list…and if you do the job perfectly…no one ever knows your name.

So…since the job has been done perfectly for three rumbles in a row…we think it’s only fair to name the person we are most grateful to for making that happen.

David Somerville from North Shore Technical High School…Thank you so much.

In order do the scoring right you need a lot of information…and you need it now! The folks who ran the registration are the same folks who kept this whole operation organized…and that would be:

Nola Garcia……no more need be said other than….Thank you…again

Lillian Stevens…who has been a part of this organization since 2000….wow!

Paula Partridge who predates Lillian by…oh heck…a long time.

Thank you Paula, Lillian and Noler….(Massachusetts pronunciation of Nola.)

If your robot breaks, really breaks, you need to get it welded. Right? Do you know who has been welding BBIQ, BOTSIQ and BattleBots for more than 7 years? Jim Stevens that’s who…and he has done one heck of a job.

Jim…always…we are grateful for so many PNHS projects that could not have been completed…or even started without your skills and support…did anyone say arena? Well they should. Thanks Jim…and thanks in advance for next year providing we all live that long.

And now for some fun…and who makes the Rumble really really fun? Right….Ron Partridge of Partridge Entertainment…and Ron has been the voice of Rumble at the Rock since..well since his son Jim was a freshman in high school…and, the truth be known, Jim is a working PhD, Aerospace research….Ron, thanks for being the guy who makes it fun…and who brings a semblance of real professionalism to the event….No one would want to do this without you.

There is a guy to whom I am personally grateful for his immersion in the Plymouth School District’s Robotic Efforts and that is my robotic coaching counterpoint over at Plymouth South High School…hard as I try to ignore him, his sense of humor, willingness to bring PSHS into the melee and his photographic talents make him a welcome and indispensible cog in our robotic machinery.

Thanks George for helping out…and for providing the humorous viewpoint we all need to keep our perspective.

By the way…If any participating teams want a copy of your official team picture…e-mail George and he will send you one. goayers@hotmail.com

The PNHS faculty and Staff are particularly appreciative of the effort and participation shown by more than 25 present and 10 former PNHS students.

The PNHS students were involved in various capacities including the creation and maintenance of the combat arena, judging, officiating, filming, field management, and policing. A special thanks goes out to the freshman class for an excellent job in providing food services for more than 300 people as well as thanks for the most pitch perfect rendition of the national anthem as sung by PNHS senior chorus members, Nicole Greenleaf and Jade Silva.

    And finally…and most important….

Thank you to every teacher, parent, every student who built robots, who came to play who even came to watch…thank you all for doing so many things right…like leaving the place cleaner than you found it…behaving like the awesome ladies and gentlemen you truelly are and by helping to ensure through your actions, the continuation of this fun event…..thank you….thank you…..thank you….
